Are We Police Officers?

Auxiliary police officers, also known as special police, volunteer police, or police reserves are either paid or volunteer part-time police officers whom operate under their respected police department. Those who are sworn in as auxiliary police officers are often retired police officers or citizens who wish to dedicate their time helping & serving their community. Many others join as they use such a position as a stepping stone to becoming a full-time officer certified through the State of Pennsylvania or other various law enforcement & criminal justice careers.

Every police department who has an auxiliary police force varies in accordance to their own respected policies from city to city and state to state as to what auxiliary police officers are authorized to do. Some auxiliary police officers under their respected department are armed while others from another department are not. Just as states are able to create and pass laws, cities are able to do the same. With or without a municipal charter, cities are able to create and pass local laws in order to cover a vast range of local affairs & issues.

The Connellsville Police Auxiliary operates under the City of Connellsville's police department. The city police department operates in accordance to the established policies and procedures passed down from the city government in order to enforce local laws and preserve the peace within the community. Accordingly, the Connellsville Police Auxiliary is required to operate in accordance to the policies and laws enacted by the city in regards to police auxiliary officers.

The Connellsville Police Auxiliary are police officers. However, they operate under strict policies and laws through the city. Those policies and laws do not certify or grant us the same powers as police officers whom are certified through the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, but they do grant us limited powers of policing in order to protect the public and preserve the peace within the city.
